Complaints Process

Do you feel your medical radiation and imaging technologist has not treated you in a professional manner during your medical imaging or radiation procedure, or do you have other concerns about the actions of a CMRITO member? There are a number of steps you can take:

  • You can speak with the medical radiation and imaging technologist

  • You can ask to speak with the medical radiation and imaging technologist’s supervisor, or the manager of the facility,  or with the health professional who ordered your procedure or treatment

  • You can call the CMRITO’s professional conduct department to discuss the issue

Do you want  the CMRITO to investigate your complaint? First, notify the Registrar in writing as soon as possible, providing full details. This starts a procedure designed to ensure a fair and thorough investigation under the direction of the CMRTIO's Inquiries, Complaints & Reports (ICR) Committee.

If you have difficulty writing your complaint, we’ll take a statement, and provide you with an opportunity to view the statement and make corrections. In your written complaint, please be sure to:

  • State that you are making a complaint against the actions of a medical radiation and imaging technologist

  • Provide the name(s) of the medical radiation and imaging technologist(s) involved. If you don’t know their name, the CMRITO can assist in identifying the medical radiation and imaging technologist(s)

  • State your specific concern and provide:

  1. the date and time the incident occurred
  2. the location where the incident occurred (e.g., name of facility, hospital, room number)
  3. the patient's name if you are not the patient
  4. as many details as possible about the incident
  5. your name, address, email address and telephone number so that an investigator can contact you

The CMRITO has jurisdiction over the medical radiation and imaging technologist who performed your medical imaging or radiation therapy treatment only, and not the administrative processes or policies of a facility or a hospital, or the health professional who ordered the procedure or treatment, or who read the images or made the diagnosis.

If your complaint is about administrative processes or policies of a clinic (Independent Health Facility) in Ontario, you can register your concern from the Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care's Independent Health Facilities Program page at http://www.health.gov.on.ca/en/public/programs/ihf/fact_sheets.aspx.

If your complaint is about the collection, use, or disclosure of your personal information, you may wish to contact the Privacy Commissioner of Ontario at www.ipc.on.ca.

Investigation of a Complaint

The CMRITO's ICR Committee conducts an investigation into all written complaints received by the CMRITO.

The ICR Committee determines what will happen to a complaint. Actions which the ICR Committee may take include:

  • Referring a complaint to the Discipline Committee for a hearing

  • Referring a complaint to the inquiry panel to investigate suspected incapacity

  • Requiring the member to appear before the ICR Committee to be cautioned

  • Requiring the member to complete specific additional training or education

  • Take no further action
